Try Not To Do Selective Outrage. (An Appeal)

Sudan a nation riven by internal conflicts from more than since the 1950s
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudanese_Civil_War

And on the 15th April 2023 things became even worse
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudanese_civil_war_(2023%E2%80%93present)

A land where mass killings, rape and roving brutal gangs masking as militias do as they please, preying on hapless civilians. These are daily events  heart-breaking horrors which basically the Western populations have not bothered about much. You can even be told off for mentioning it, as distracting from other calamities.

Consider these figures taken from the Wikipedia link:

  • Likely significantly more than 150,000 total killed
  • More than 700,000 children with acute malnutrition (with 522,000 likely being dead)[
  • 8,856,313 internally displaced
  • 3,506,383 refugees

And now between 250,000 to 300,000 are trapped in El-Fasher while militia forces close in, forces that see these people as foes.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp8wzzjze8xo

Now the thorny part.
We know full well about the horrors which are taking place in Gaza. We see that a right-wing nationalistic fundamentalist government backed by an ultra violent section of the population are running free of most restraints and are taking war to the ultimate most extreme sort – elimination of the foe from its land. And people have taken to the streets and social media in protest. Because Israel and the Middle East always attracts news headlines and attention.
People are naturally horrified by what is taking place.
So I will ask of you. Why doesn’t Sudan warrant the same reaction?
Why are there no marches or protests?
The BBC News (much maligned by some activist groups) has kept up a steady stream of items. So has Al -Jazeera. PBS, CNN, ABC in the USA have reported on it. Newspaper columnists have drawn attention to it. There is a steady output of appeals from Aid Agencies and Charities on Social Media. The campaigning group Avaaz is currently running an appeal for signatures.
And yet…and yet..
Where is the Western Public Display of Outrage and Horror?

And there are more out there, maybe not as large but as equally horrifying for the people living through them.
Need to know more? Here’s one window.
https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/armed-conflict/

Of course you my dear reader cannot be everywhere physically marching, you can’t contribute to every appeal, you can’t be emotionally invested in every one of the conflicts across this world, you’d be frazzled out in a month.
Spare a thought once in a while for those suffering, everywhere across the globe, day in day, lament for them from time to time and if you have a spare few ‘coins’ choose one charity to donate to. Make it your business to have at least an idea of the series of conflicts taking place. You don’t have a working knowledge of each one, that’s not possible unless you are a professional.

But at least care. And stay Woke.

Another In My Series of Mature In-depth Responses

Victorian writer

USA- Candidate Trump and his flock of devotees howling outrage at over stretched FEMA while folk in Florida suffer another hurricane.

UK– A government, rapidly and actually excessively proving my personal dictum ‘In Democracy prepared to be disappointed by your choice,’. With a Conservative Opposition Party in a hurry to vote as their leader either one person who adheres to the Foot in Mouth approach and another who insults the record of armed forces personnel (Familiar  to readers in the USA?)

France – A Nation which manages to be simultaneously Far Left and Far Right and determined not to have a workable government.

Europe– A place in which many have collectively forgotten the lessons of 1940-1945 and think ‘Let’s Give It One More Try’

Putin– A fellow popular with:
Russians: Because they have no choice.
Swathes of Central Africa: Because they never had a Russian empire over there – yet.
European Left: Because he is not American.
American Right: Because he isn’t liked by the Democrats.

Where Are or were: Mass protests movements over the horrors of Sudan; genocide of the Rohingya; Cultural Genocide of the Uyghur and other Turkic groups in China; In Iran the brutal sometimes fatal suppression of Women’s protests.

Conspiracy Theories: Adherence to a system where the simple explanation of error, human folly or events outside human control are replaced by complex, unlikely, impractical plans conducted by impossibly effective agencies. This has done more to the undermining of belief in government than any revolutionary organisation could dream of.

Well, that’s just a few – And it’s time again to modify Thomas Paine’ ageless statement ‘These Are Times Which Test Folks’ Souls’

Encountering all those above and also weary after a very busy few days, which involved telling woefully ill-formed folk why they should get the (redacted) of ‘this’ charity page and take their spiteful prejudiced remarks and…. (redacted) – well that was the basic sub-text.  I can only sum up my feelings on all of the above and their unconditional followers succinctly as:

Nothing is Easy. Nothing is Straightforward. Populism is a Mirage. Humanity Does Not Get The Last Say.

This is another of those complex wandering posts of mine. My defence is in the Title. There are no simple solutions. The script of Life is long and complex and Humanity is not the principal writer either. I thought images were needed too. The news is coming in thick and fast this year, at least it seems that way.

You will see this post contains a number of those images. These are of the consequences of wars and those of Nature’s Environmental activities. They all involve suffering and great loss of life. Those of the latter could have been minimised if the nations involved were not strangled by wars or by governments with fundamentalist, opportunistic or cheap squabbling agendas. Thus they are all linked by actions, reaction or interaction. There are underlying tragic themes of inevitabilities, some because this is how the way The World works, others because of Humanity’s short-sighted and narrow-minded follies, failing to learn that the ‘last war’ was not glorious, but was due to a miscalculation, one which continues to happen over and over again.

We start with War. Because nothing sells so well as War. Right? It’s buried deep into our frameworks. Warning: The Sardonic will be at work here– Every war can be justified, by all sides. It’s so simple. Of course, there are costs. But those can’t be helped, can they? After all ‘We’ had no choice, if We started it; it was because of because of ‘Them’, they were the threats. Look at our histories (well, the ones we wrote; not theirs those are all lies). So Reader let us start by looking at latest headliners in Gaza / Southern Israel

And we have not looked at the inter community violence which springs up in many nations or has festered at the low key for years.  So there will be no room here to consider all of the Human Rights, Regional and International Implications, much less the matrix of causes.

Meanwhile there are the constant reminders that despite the Deity complex some folk think Human posses or the antics of The Unholy Faith of Denial the Dynamics of this world has the last say, not us.

And we have not considered Famines nor Diseases nor the Serious Poverty that takes lives slowly.

The weighty truth being that none of these events are new by any means, a scroll through history will bring you examples of all these events and similar, even larger losses of life. However what shakes the fatalistic and providing you live in the comfier parts of the First World, complacent view is that TODAY.

We have the countless examples of what does not work

We have the technology to ease the suffering

We have the wealth to invest

We know how Corruption works

We have the scientific knowledge to open our eyes to solutions.

The problems being, aside from the Age Old ones of ignorance, prejudice, greed and so on. We know have a system that can spread lies world-wide at the touch of a button, and We fall for them, or We say the events are nothing to do with or, or What Can We Do. We also can twist technology to make it cause harm, theft, fear and hate. There is nothing corrosive or destructive We cannot do if we switch off our consciences and compassion.

Ah Dear Reader. It all seems hopeless does it not? What can you or I mere small individuals do against such Flaws of Humanity or Forces of Nature?

I’ll offer you this yet again

There are no simple solutions.

The world is a complexity of cause and effect. I’ll give you one example. If cocaine and heroin had not become chic drugs to be indulged in by the comfortable as a recreation or the desperate as an escape and if the use had not be made ‘everyday’ in media and entertainment there would not have been the demand. If there had not been the demand there would not be the proliferation of powerful drug cartels in poverty struck nations. If there were not such desperate circumstances  there would not be floods of immigrants. Why the surprise? There has been a northwards drift in the USA for decades? Walls? Border Patrols? You’d need a small border and a Communist style state to cope with the flood of the desperate.  I could give you a Cause and Effect in Europe too. Yet….apparently the simple solution is more border patrols and populist governments. That is just a summary of one Cause and Effect and an addition.

We come back to this then:

No populist solution will work to any problem, be it on the Left or the Right, or the Activist. Look at those pictures again, and again….and again. Is any one of those problems going to be solved by a line of spluttering outrage on social media? Is anyone really going to sort it all out in a few months? Do throwing paper towels help? Or suggesting one community moves out of an area? Or denying what is happening? Or blaming just one side?

Neither you, nor I can stop what is happening or what has happened in the above images. What we can do though is adhere to a few factors. Compassion. Respect. Tolerance. Neighbourliness. And turn our backs on those who Deny and Distort. Those who spread Hate and Ignorance. Those whose incompetence and unsuitability is masked by Populism.

Of course nothing will stop The Earthquakes or Volcanoes. Or Extremes of weather. But We can minimise the effects, for there are efforts being made. We can support those, and not listen to those babbling about socialism a subject they evidently know nothing about.

And there is the adage to remember which seems to be have many origins and is still being passed down:

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness”

One person’s small efforts then? The intolerant still haven’t got the notion that ‘Snowflake’ is the stupidest insult ever. Why do they they think blizzards are comprised of? How do they think they can’t get their fancy cars out and about? Lots and lots and lots of snowflakes then?

Or lots of folk with little trowels working away, all together.

That’s how you actual drain a swamp.

Assuming draining the swamp is a good idea.

And by the way. If you do hit someone or throw something at them, don’t complain if they return the action. Those who start something don’t always get to be the ones to write the final script.

And to repeat; because some folk just don’t get it. Nothing is easy. And for those completely shorn of sense. Not everything that happens in this world is the result of a conspiracy.

Do something positive, help someone in some way.

It’s a start.

Look at the above. We have to start, somewhere.

Required to Write Because…. (A Lament)

Lamentation for the Future

Foreword: One danger or risk in writing is The Mood taking over. You have this urge to write ‘something’ in the style, even the content you have doubts about. This could be using a format you are not comfortable with or a subject matter which you are sure ‘needs more work’. And yet The Mood insists that this is how it will be. Part of you is still urging caution and suggesting the result should be put away for another day to be nuanced, worked on with reflection, jagged parts given a better ‘finishing’. The Mood will have none of that; it insists on the raw product be made public; The Mood in this case fancies itself to be a distant cousin of Melpomene, the Greek muse of Tragedy and bothered me to produce this. Truth be known I know not just what form this is. I dare not suggest poetry as that could bring sad shakings of head or even noises of disapproval from genuine poets. It may be some kind of monologue or soliloquy  in a play never to be written. All I am certain of is that it is a response to the news of several floods, droughts, fires and storms this year coupled with the continued presence of the Denial Industry, its Political Appointees and Social Media acolytes. (And probably influence of three or four Scottish laments which are ever in the back of my mind. No one does laments like the Scots)

                  I was born
                When the seasons sang
                To an ancient song
                  With a warning verse
                  Of our vulnerability.
                  But our vanity and greed
                  Plugged our ears
                  Blinded our eyes
Said it would all be fine
                  There would be sunshine
                  After all the rains
And the storms were but passing trials
                  Cured by reassuring leaders’ smiles.
                  And mercenary pundits’ lies

                  Now the forests burn
                  Consuming innocents’ homes
                  While the begged for rains
                  Gather in far off tribes
                 Thus, with cousins grim
                  Sweep other folk away
                  Into seas that warm,
                  In their silent scorn.

                  There will come the day
                  Mayhap not so far away
                  When my eyes will close
                 For the very last time.
                  Weep not for me,
                  I will be at rest.
                  Save your tears for those
                  Who are left behind
To the wild, hot fiery winds
                  The raging storms
                  And the blazing sun
                 That blazing sun.

American Gun Crime -When Stats No Longer Cover It

weeping-statue-of-liberty

Pity help us but here’s a lot of killing going on in the world, most of it to do with wars and inter-communal violence.  The USA however seems to be particularly afflicted with random civilian on civilian gun death. Anyone who reads this post will already be familiar with the statistics so let’s not dwell on those. Let’s consider the avoidable tragedy and random mass killings.

I was going to attempt a socio-analytical overview of an opinion as to why this is happening, but the images of more death innocents who were not protected by large numbers of their gun owning community as the NRA would have you believe should be the case just made that difficult. Instead something else, deeper took hold:

Playwright Alan Plater and folk singer Alex Glasgow collaborated on a play (well more like a review) titled ‘Close The Coal House Door’. With dialogue and songs it was a bitter reflection on the historical lot of the Coal Miner and those Communities. This was produced in the 1960s and in an era when coal mining in the UK has been industrially sanitised is dated. But not the following song which although sung wistfully is filled with anger at a situation that has gone on too long.

Lyrics: (Because it’s sung in dialect) (I hope this links works for folk outside of the UK)

Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s blood inside
Blood from broken hands and feet
Blood that’s dried of pitblack meat
Blood from hearts that know no beat
Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s blood inside

Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s bones inside
Mangled, splintered piles of bones
Buried ‘neath a mile of stones
Not a soul to hear the groans
Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s bones inside

Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s bairns* inside
Bairns that had no time to hide
Bairns who saw the blackness slide
Bairns beneath the mountainside**
Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s bairns inside

Close the coalhouse door, lad
And stay outside
Geordie’s* **standing at the dole****
And Mrs Jackson like a fool
Complains about the price of coal
Close the coalhouse door, lad
There’s blood inside
There’s bones inside
There’s bairns inside
So stay outside

*Scots and N.E. English word for babies or young children

**These lines reference the Aberfan Disaster of 1966 when an avalanche of pit slurry engulfed a school and houses killing 116 children and 28 adults

*** Dialect used and generic name for inhabitants of parts of N.E England- a region with a history of coal mining

**** General UK slang word for Social Security payments for the unemployed. and offices where it was paid.

This theme of almost helpless anger struck me as applicable to the current slaughter by American gun-crime. So I adapted it as follows:

Clean up that gun friend
There’s blood inside
Blood from innocents cut down
Blood coughed out in a dying sound
Blood that stains more than ground
Clean up that gun friend
There’s blood inside.

Attend to your trigger housings, folk
In case there’s rust inside
Rust from tears in anguish shed
By Families of the innocent dead
Tired of cheap excuses said
Attention to your trigger housings, folk
In case there’s rust inside

Careful with the breech, you
There’re ghosts inside
Ghosts of kids Life just begun
Sacrificed on the bloody altar of the gun
Kids lost to the warmth of the sun
Careful with the breech, you
There’re ghosts inside

So wary of your gun friend
There’re lies inside
While the killing, it persists
Politicians with snake oil conspiracists
Talk about phantom socialists
So wary of that gun friend
There’s blood inside
There’re tears inside
There’re ghosts inside
There’re lies inside

OK, I’ve said my piece. I let the song do the talking

United Airlines Flight 93. You Too Now Belong To The Ages

United Airlines 93

Edward M Stanton Lincoln Secretary to Lincoln is attributed with saying on Lincoln’s death ‘Now he belongs to the ages’ . These words themselves have become synonymous with any act worthy of remembrance.

And so the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 on the 11th September 2001 have earned this memorial. We cannot be sure of the exact sequence of events in analytical detail. We can be certain in the time preceding the crash the passengers were aware this was not one single event and that something dramatic was unfolding. The realisation was dawning that there would be no flying to somewhere unexpected and suffering the hostage experience. People were beginning to understand passivity would not be rewarded.

The last messages are well-known, and ‘let’s roll’ has become set into the lexicon of other heroic words. There are then sounds, cries, shouts, chaos before the final descent into immortality.

Coverage of the events of 11th September 2001 USA understandably focused on New York and The Pentagon Washington. What took place on United Airlines Flight 93 in relative terms gradually filtered out to the public.

We cannot doubt the commitment of the hijackers of United Airlines Flight 93 that day, they were certain of their own fate. What they had not taken into account was the spontaneous reaction of a group of ordinary untrained civilians who aware of what was unfolding were not prepared to play the role allotted to them in those plans. The hijackers had not taken into account another style of commitment, they had not expected what any good military officer of experience could have told them, in extreme conditions even the least trained, least expected can do the unexpected.

The evidence indicates that two National Guard pilots were on their way to do possibly the unthinkable, their own lives written off. Unlike in the films or books aircraft do not fly unerringly straight to the target, particularly in a situation where all proverbial hell is breaking loose, so they did not ‘lock onto the target after a tense pause’. We will never know how that drama would have played out.

We do know United Airlines Flight 93 crashed far from whatever target the hijackers had in mind. The USA will forever be in debt to those passengers.

Some mildly profane words; borrowed from those who were ‘there’.

They may have volunteered out of patriotism, or for the ‘adventure’. They may have been told by the Government they were ‘required’. They may started out as ‘ordinary’ folk; they may have been ‘screw-ups’; they may have been downright annoying; they may have been ‘nasty pieces of work’; they may have been tough; they may have spent their time being scared or ‘bitching’.

They may have been killed, died of injuries, disease, accident or ‘dumb luck’. They may have survived and lived or are living out the war in a loop.

No one composes laments quite like the Scots; this songs was written for the 51st (Highland Division) as they left Sicily in 1943- there are several versions song in broad dialects and are difficult to follow without study- this version by the Clancy Brothers was angelized for general consumption. The message is universal for all soldiers leaving a warzone. One mild profanity from the original song and not here here but worth a mention:

‘Poor biddy (bloody) bastards are weary’

Some might feel uncomfortable about what may be seen as a celebration of war. This is no celebration; this is a remembrance for those who witnessed, heard, smelt and felt the weakness of flesh when fed on by metal, flame and explosion.

Listen to me willya! This book has been out for one month, there’s been a advertising campaign and still you an’t buying it!! WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE?????  Ohhhhhhh I know what it’s all about. All those social media types with their Youth Orientation and what is ….’Trending’, so anyone who is not in the right profiles gets ignored. It’s just like what happens to me, Pete and Burt when we asked the Town Council if we could play our Kazoo renditioning of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ on the 4th July three years back, and they turned us down because it might have been seen as ‘disrespectful’……. HA!…Disrespectful! They just didn’t want three old guys strutting their stuff that’s all! And don’t think we haven’t noticed they have not replaced that old omnibus of Dick Tracy cartoons in the town library which they removed because ‘they’ said it was in need of repair….HA!! What AND happened to the ‘Smokey Stover’ collection???….They still won’t answer that question!!    I tell ya, it’s a pretty sorry state when an ordinary guy who’s lived an ordinary life, not making a fuss or being on ‘Reality TV’ can’t get his book noticed…Just ‘because’. You take Burt, who spent ten years researching  and writing up a three volume commentary on the History of Pot Roast and did anyone take it up? Did they…Huh? I mean, it’s POT ROAST for pity’s sakes, y’ can’t get more patriotic or basic roots of culture  than POT ROAST!!!  And then you can’t get anything controversial  published unless you’re already well known or some sorta wacko that a bunch of TV executives found. Me an’ Pete collaborated on two volumes being critical of folk of high profile irrespective of politics, gender, race, religion or which baseball team they followed titled ‘And Here’s Another Idiot’ followed up by ‘It’s You Stupid Lot that Make Them Wealthy’. I mean how controversial can you get? But did anyone give us a sniff! Did they? Hah! Nnnnooo because in their eyes we were 70 year old nobodies, with no profile or ‘Twitter’ accounts! I tell ya, it’s The Living In A  Stacked Deck scenario all over again!!!

But you see, my dear sir, there is an inherent flaw in your argument. For surely the whole purpose of these whimsical marketing endeavours is to raise the profile of the work in question and thus encourage the individual to purchase a copy. Thus by your last statement you have created a contradiction in that, if a person were to purchase a copy of the said volume, then there would be  no need to read the marketing. Ergo your previous comment is void of any substantial meaning.

It would seem to me your approaches are either very plebeian or shockingly drenched in self-indulgence. I would suggest a Classical Theme be given to this venture. Underscore the Tragedy of the entire enterprise, in viewing, quite frankly the folly of the whole enterprise the audience would be curious as to the nature of this work and thus one…or …two may be inclined to purchase a copy. The obvious choice would be the Greek playwrights such as Sophocles…..
